How many people fit on a Dubai charter yacht?

How many people can go on a yacht in Dubai comes down to the vessel licence: between 12 and 35 guests on a typical charter yacht, depending on the boat's length. That number includes children and infants, it is a legal limit rather than a comfort estimate, and no captain can exceed it. For more than 35, a privately hired dhow takes up to 100.

The short version

  • 48ft carries 12, 55ft carries 16, 62ft carries 22, 85ft carries 35. Above that, a dhow takes 100.
  • The number is set by the vessel licence, not the deck space. Two boats of the same length can differ.
  • Children, infants, a photographer, a DJ and catering staff all count towards it.
  • Comfortable is about two-thirds of legal on any charter longer than three hours.
  • A captain cannot exceed it for any reason. The extra guest is turned away at the pontoon.

How many people fit, by boat size

Guest capacity does not scale neatly with length, because it is set by the vessel's commercial licence rather than by how many people fit on the deck. Two boats of the same length can carry different numbers.

  • 48ft: up to 12 guests, from AED 750 per hour
  • 55ft: up to 16 guests, from AED 1,050 per hour
  • 62ft: up to 22 guests, from AED 1,400 per hour
  • 85ft: up to 35 guests, from AED 3,200 per hour
  • Private dhow: up to 100 guests, from about AED 9,000 for two hours

Why a Dubai yacht's guest limit is not negotiable

The licensed number is what the vessel's safety equipment, life-raft capacity and insurance are rated for. A captain who exceeds it is operating outside the licence, and if anything goes wrong the insurance does not respond. Crews will turn people away at the pontoon rather than sail over the number, which is a miserable way to start an afternoon.

Children count. Infants count. A photographer, a DJ and a caterer's staff all count. If your list has thirteen people and the boat is licensed for twelve, the answer is a different boat, not a favour.

Groups larger than 35

Two options. A privately hired dhow takes up to a hundred guests from about AED 9,000 for two hours with a buffet, which works out near AED 90 a head. No yacht comes close at that size. Or two yachts running the same route together, which costs more but keeps the atmosphere of a private boat.

For a wedding or a launch above a hundred, a venue ashore with a boat for the photographs usually beats trying to put everyone afloat.

Where the deck space actually is

A licensed number tells you what is permitted; it does not tell you where those people will be. On a charter yacht the guests distribute across three or four distinct areas, and how well a group fits depends on whether those areas suit what they came to do.

The aft deck is the social centre: shaded, seated, and where food and conversation happen. It takes roughly half the guest number comfortably. The bow has sun pads for three or four lying down and is the best seat under way. The flybridge holds four or five with the best view and the most wind. The saloon below is air-conditioned and holds a handful when the sun is high.

The consequence is that a group which wants to sit together fits a smaller number than a group happy to spread out. Twenty-two on a 62ft works well for a party and poorly for a business lunch, because a business lunch needs everybody within speaking distance and a party does not.

  • Aft deck: shaded and seated, takes about half the guest number
  • Bow: sun pads for three or four, best seat under way
  • Flybridge: four or five, best view, windiest
  • Saloon: air-conditioned, a handful, essential in summer
  • Swim platform: two or three at a time; the queue forms here

Sleeping capacity is a different number entirely

This trips people up on overnight charters. Daytime capacity is set by safety equipment and licensing; sleeping capacity is set by the number of berths, and the two are nothing alike.

A 62ft licensed for twenty-two guests by day sleeps six, in three cabins. An 85ft licensed for thirty-five sleeps eight, in four. So an overnight charter for a group of twenty means fourteen people leaving by tender at some point in the evening, which is an arrangement rather than an afterthought.

If an overnight is the plan, size the booking on berths rather than on the daytime number, and expect the group to be smaller than a day charter would allow.

How to count your group correctly

Almost every capacity problem on a pontoon traces back to a headcount given casually at the enquiry stage and never revisited. The number that matters is bodies aboard, not invitations sent.

Count everyone: adults, teenagers, children, infants in arms, the friend who is only coming for an hour, the photographer, the DJ, and any catering staff who will be on the boat. Do not count the captain and crew. They sit outside the guest number.

Then add your realistic growth. Groups expand between booking and boarding far more often than they shrink, and the cost of sizing up at the enquiry stage is usually a few hundred dirhams, while the cost of discovering it at the berth is somebody not sailing. If you are within two of a limit, take the next boat up.

  • Count adults, teenagers, children and infants: all of them
  • Count vendors on board: photographer, DJ, catering staff
  • Do not count the captain and crew
  • Add expected growth; groups get bigger, not smaller
  • Within two of a limit? Size up. It is cheaper than the alternative

If the group is genuinely too big

Above thirty-five guests there is no yacht in Dubai licensed to take you, and that is a hard ceiling rather than a matter of budget. Chartering something bigger from a partner fleet does not solve it either. Capacity is set by certification rather than length, and most 100ft and 35m boats are still licensed for around thirty-five to fifty.

The realistic options are a private dhow, which takes up to a hundred with dinner from about AED 9,000 and works out near AED 90 a head; or two yachts running the same route together, which preserves the private-boat feel and costs considerably more.

Two boats has one drawback worth naming: the party splits, and it stays split for the whole charter. For a wedding or a company event where a speech has to happen, that is usually decisive in favour of the dhow.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many people can go on a yacht in Dubai?

Between 12 and 35 on a typical charter yacht, set by the boat's licence rather than its deck space. A 48ft carries 12, a 55ft carries 16, a 62ft carries 22 and an 85ft carries 35.

Do children count towards the yacht guest limit?

Yes, at any age, including infants. So do a photographer, a DJ and any catering staff. The licensed number counts everyone physically aboard.

What is the biggest group a boat in Dubai can take?

A privately hired traditional dhow takes up to 100 guests, from about AED 9,000 for two hours with dinner. Charter yachts top out around 35 on an 85ft.

How many people fit comfortably on a 48ft yacht?

Eight to nine for a relaxed half-day, against a licensed twelve. The full number is fine for a two-hour sunset run where people are standing and looking outward, and tight for four hours with lunch aboard.

Can we add one more person on the day?

Only if it stays inside the licensed number. Above it, a captain cannot sail, and the extra guest is turned away on the pontoon. Give the real headcount when you book.

How many people can sleep on a yacht in Dubai?

Far fewer than can board by day. A 62ft licensed for twenty-two guests sleeps six across three cabins; an 85ft licensed for thirty-five sleeps eight across four. Overnight charters should be sized on berths, not the daytime number.

Does the captain count towards the guest limit?

No. The captain and crew sit outside the licensed guest number. Everyone else aboard counts, including children, infants, a photographer, a DJ and any catering staff.

What if my group is bigger than 35 people?

No yacht in Dubai is licensed above about thirty-five, and chartering a longer boat does not help because capacity comes from certification rather than length. Hire a private dhow, up to a hundred guests with dinner from about AED 9,000.

Can two boats run together for a larger group?

Yes, and it is the alternative to a dhow above thirty-five guests. It costs considerably more and has one real drawback: the party splits across two decks and stays split. For anything involving a speech, a single dhow usually wins.
