The reason to do this in Dubai rather than anywhere else is the backdrop. A thirty-minute ride out of the Marina puts you level with JBR and Bluewaters; an hour gets you down past the Palm to a point directly off the Burj Al Arab, which is as close as anyone gets to that building without a reservation. Most people book thirty minutes and then wish they had booked an hour.
You ride with a guide, always, on a marked route. That is a rule rather than an upsell. The water off Dubai is busy with commercial traffic and the guide keeps the group out of the shipping lanes. Two people can share a ski and swap halfway.
A briefing, a life jacket and fuel are included in every rate. You do not need a licence, any previous experience, or your own equipment. Bring sunglasses that will survive being soaked and shoes you do not mind leaving in a locker.

What is included
- Two-seat jet ski with fuel for the full session
- Life jacket, safety briefing and a guide on the water
- Marked route clear of commercial shipping lanes
- Locker for phones, keys and shoes
- Photographs from the guide's ski on request
Worth knowing
- Book the hour rather than the half hour. Thirty minutes ends about the time you stop being nervous.
- Sessions run from roughly 8am to sunset. Mornings are flatter; late afternoon has the better light.
- Jet skis can run alongside a yacht charter and meet you at anchor. Arrange it when you book the boat.
Thirty minutes or an hour on a jet ski in Dubai
Thirty minutes covers the Marina mouth, the JBR shoreline and a loop around the Bluewaters end. It is a genuine ride and it is enough to know whether you like jet skiing. What it is not is enough to reach anything: the Burj Al Arab is about fifteen minutes out at cruising pace, so a thirty-minute session that went there would be a there-and-back with no stop, and the guides do not run it.
The hour adds the run past the Palm and a stop with engines idling directly off the Burj Al Arab, close enough that the building fills the frame. That stop is the single most photographed moment in Dubai watersports and it exists only on the hour and above.
There is a second, less obvious gain. Everybody spends the first ten minutes tense, sitting upright and over-braking. On a thirty-minute session that is a third of your time; on an hour it is a sixth, and the remaining fifty minutes are the ones you enjoy.
No licence, and why a guide comes with you
No licence is required to ride as a guest with a licensed operator, which is why you can land at the airport in the morning and be on a ski that afternoon. The driver must be sixteen or over and that is not negotiable however experienced a fifteen-year-old is; passengers can be from about eight provided a life jacket fits properly.
A guide rides with every group, and that is not an upsell. The corridors you may use off Dubai Marina are defined, the Marina mouth carries commercial traffic, and a lead rider keeps the group inside the permitted area. You are riding with someone who decides where the group goes rather than following a fixed route at a distance.
What it is actually like, and what to bring
Easier than people expect and more physically tiring than they anticipate. There are no gears and no brake in the car sense — a throttle under your right thumb and handlebars — and you slow by releasing the throttle, which takes a few minutes to trust. The tiredness comes from bracing: most people notice their forearms and thighs the next day rather than at the time.
The water off the Marina is usually flat in the morning and picks up a short chop after about eleven when the sea breeze fills in. A morning session is the gentler introduction and gives better light at the Burj Al Arab.
Bring less than you think. Whatever is in your pockets will get wet and there is nowhere on a ski to put anything. Sunglasses without a strap are lost rather than dropped, and a phone taken out anywhere but the stop is a phone on the seabed.

Questions people ask
How much is a jet ski in Dubai?
From AED 250 for thirty minutes and AED 450 for an hour, per ski, carrying up to two people. Fuel, life jacket, briefing and a guide are included. The hour buys the Burj Al Arab route, which the half hour does not reach.
Do you need a licence to ride a jet ski in Dubai?
No. A briefing is given before you go out and a guide rides with the group. The minimum age to drive is sixteen; children from eight can ride as a passenger with an adult.
Can you jet ski to the Burj Al Arab?
Yes: it is the most popular route and takes about an hour from Dubai Marina. The guide stops with engines idling directly off the hotel for photographs. Landing there is not permitted.
Where can you rent a jet ski in Dubai?
Dubai Marina, JBR and Palm Jumeirah are the three main launch points. The Marina has the best route options; the Palm has the flattest water.
Can we take jet skis out with a yacht charter?
Yes. Skis can meet the boat at the anchorage and stay alongside for the swim stop. Arrange it when you book the charter rather than on the day. It needs a separate ski and rider.
