The city after the sun goes down
The Creek, Al Seef and the skyline are all different places at night, and most of the water here is better after six. Where to be, and when.
Dubai works better after dark for most of the year, and on the water that is not a preference — between May and September it is the only sensible time to be out. The evening trips run on a different geography from the daytime ones: the Creek and Al Seef rather than the Palm, and a skyline that only exists once it is lit.
The four dhow departure points are genuinely four different trips rather than four versions of one. Dubai Creek boards in Deira and runs between the old souks and the cargo wharfage, and at AED 99 per person it is both the cheapest and, for a first visit, the most worthwhile. Dubai Marina boards at Marina Walk and runs the channel towards Bluewaters. Al Seef and the Water Canal are shorter and quieter.
New Year is the one night this coast changes shape completely. Boats are positioned rather than cruising, the marine traffic plan is set by the authorities weeks ahead, and the whole thing sells out in November — which means the decision gets made in September or not at all.

Things to do in Dubai at night
The best things to do in Dubai after dark are on or beside the water: a two-hour dhow dinner cruise from AED 99, night swimming at floodlit Umm Suqeim 1, a private sunset charter, or simply the Marina promenade, which is at its best after ten.

Dubai Creek in one evening: the itinerary
This Dubai Creek evening itinerary runs about four hours: the Deira spice and gold souks from five, the abra across to Bur Dubai for AED 1, Al Seef and the old quarter at dusk, and a dhow dinner cruise at eight from AED 99.

Deira and the Creek in winter, the best months in Dubai
Deira in Dubai in winter is the half of the city that only works when it is cool: the gold and spice souks, the dhow wharfage where cargo boats still load by hand, and the AED 1 abra crossing are all outdoor, all walkable, and all close to unbearable in August.
Questions people ask
What time does it actually get dark in Dubai?
Between 17:35 and 17:50 in December and January, and around 19:15 in June and July. The useful figure for planning is that the light goes quickly here — there is about twenty-five minutes between sunset and full dark, rather than the hour that visitors from higher latitudes expect.
Is the old part of Dubai safe to walk around at night?
Yes, and it is busier after dark than during the day for most of the year. Deira, Al Seef and the Creek waterfronts are well lit, policed and full of families until late. The abra crossings run until midnight and cost AED 1.
Do the evening cruises run every night, including public holidays?
Nightly, year-round, including through both Eids and on National Day. The two exceptions are the first nights of Ramadan, when some operators shift departure times to after iftar, and 31 December, when normal schedules are replaced by New Year pricing and a fixed marine traffic plan.
Dhow cruise Dubai
A dhow cruise in Dubai costs from AED 99 per person for two hours with a buffet dinner, live entertainment and unlimited soft drinks. Four departure points run nightly (Dubai Marina, Dubai Creek, Al Seef and the Water Canal), and they are genuinely different trips, not four versions of the same one.
