Things to do in Dubai at night

The best things to do in Dubai after dark are on or beside the water: a two-hour dhow dinner cruise from AED 99, night swimming at floodlit Umm Suqeim 1, a private sunset charter, or simply the Marina promenade, which is at its best after ten.

Dubai Marina after dark, the towers lit and their colour running across the water

The short version

  • A dhow dinner cruise is the best-value night out in Dubai: two hours with dinner from AED 99.
  • Umm Suqeim 1 is floodlit for night swimming with lifeguards until midnight, and it is free.
  • The Marina promenade runs about seven kilometres and is at its best after ten, when the heat has gone.
  • The Dubai Fountain runs every half hour until 23:00. From an abra on the lake it costs about AED 70.
  • The abra across Dubai Creek costs AED 1 and is the cheapest thing worth doing in the city.

On the water

A dinner cruise is the obvious one and it is genuinely good value: two hours, dinner included, from AED 99 on the Creek and AED 129 in the Marina. Boarding is around 19:30 most nights.

A private charter after dark is a different thing again. The Marina channel at night, with the towers lit on both banks and no traffic on the water, is the best-looking twenty minutes in the city. A two-hour evening charter from AED 1,500 covers it.

In the water

Umm Suqeim 1 is floodlit for night swimming with lifeguards until around midnight, and it costs nothing. In summer this is the only time of day the sea is actually refreshing, and the beach is busier at 10pm in August than at noon.

Beside the water

The Marina promenade runs about seven kilometres and is at its best after ten, when the heat has gone and the restaurants have thinned out. Dubai Marina Mall to Pier 7 and back is an hour at a walking pace.

The Dubai Fountain runs every half hour until eleven and is free. Watching it from an abra on the Burj Lake costs about AED 70 and puts you at water level, which is a better angle than the bridge.

Old Dubai is the underrated half of the city at night. The Deira souks stay open late, the abra across the Creek costs AED 1, and Al Seef is lit and quiet after nine.

  • Dhow dinner cruise: 2 hours, from AED 99, boards around 19:30
  • Night swimming at Umm Suqeim 1: floodlit and free, until midnight
  • Marina promenade: best after 10pm, about an hour end to end
  • Dubai Fountain from an abra: half-hourly until 23:00
  • Deira souks and the AED 1 abra crossing. Open late, almost free

Things to do in Dubai at night, in the order that works

Rather than a list to choose from, here is a sequence that fits together geographically and by time, which is the part most itineraries get wrong in a city this spread out.

For the modern side: be on the Marina promenade by about six, eat early at one of the Pier 7 or Marina Walk places, board a dhow or a private charter at 19:30, and be back ashore by ten with the towers lit for the walk back. That is a complete evening within about a kilometre of itself.

For old Dubai: start at the Deira souks around five while they are still busy, take the abra across to Bur Dubai for AED 1, walk Al Seef as the light goes, and board a Creek dhow cruise at eight from AED 99. Done in that order it costs under AED 150 a head and shows you the Dubai that existed before the towers.

  • Marina evening: promenade at 18:00, dinner, 19:30 cruise, back by 22:00
  • Old Dubai evening: souks at 17:00, AED 1 abra, Al Seef, 20:00 Creek dhow
  • Downtown evening: Fountain shows from 18:00 half-hourly, abra ride, Souk Al Bahar
  • Do not try to combine Marina and Deira in one night. They are forty minutes apart

What summer nights are actually for

Between May and September the evening is not a preference in Dubai, it is the only usable part of the day, and the city rearranges itself around that. Beaches fill after nine, the promenade is busier at eleven than at six, and restaurant terraces that are empty in the afternoon are full at midnight.

This is when night swimming stops being a novelty and becomes the point. The sea in August holds 33°C, which is too warm to be refreshing in daylight and pleasant once the air has dropped. Umm Suqeim 1 at ten in the evening in August is one of the genuinely good things about a Dubai summer.

Boat trips shift with it. Summer charters run early morning or from six in the evening, and the seven-to-nine window is both the most comfortable time to be on deck and the calmest water of the year. The dhow cruises run at their normal times year-round, because they are shaded and air-conditioned below.

The water at night, from a boat

Worth separating out, because it is the thing this site knows best and the thing most visitors do not realise is available. Dubai after dark from the water is a completely different city from Dubai after dark on foot.

The Marina channel is the reason. It is a narrow canal with lit towers on both banks, and a boat moving through it at idle speed puts you close enough to look up rather than across. You cannot get that view from any road, any restaurant or any observation deck. The buildings were designed to be seen from where the channel puts you, and after dark the whole thing is lit.

Every evening charter includes it twice, on the way out and on the way back, and the return leg is better because the sky has gone fully dark behind the lighting. A two-hour evening charter from AED 1,500 is the whole of it; a dhow cruise from AED 129 covers the same channel on a shared boat.

Practical notes for a night out

A few things that shape a Dubai evening more than the choice of activity does.

The metro stops running around midnight on weeknights and one in the morning at weekends, and the two Marina stations are a ten to fifteen minute walk from the water. Taxis are plentiful and cheap by international standards, and ride-hailing works everywhere. Friday evening traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road is the one genuine obstacle: allow an hour for anything crossing the city.

Alcohol is served in licensed venues, which in practice means hotels and a large number of restaurants, and it is not served on most dhow cruises. Drinking in public is not permitted, and that includes the promenade and the beach. Dress on the beach and the promenade is relaxed; shoulders and knees covered is the right default anywhere in old Dubai and the souks.

  • Metro until about midnight, later at weekends; Marina stations are a 10-15 minute walk
  • Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap and everywhere
  • Allow an hour for anything crossing the city on a Friday evening
  • Alcohol in licensed venues only; not in public, and not on most dhows
  • Cover shoulders and knees in the souks and old Dubai
