What this boat has

  • Shaded aft deck and a flybridge for the skyline
  • Swim platform, snorkels and a floating mat
  • Bluetooth sound system throughout

Who we put on it

Groups of eight to twelve, first charters, couples on a sunset run, and families who want a low swim platform rather than a big boat.

Most people book bigger than they need. If your group sits between two boats, message us: a two-minute conversation usually saves money.

Where everyone sits

The aft deck is the social centre: shaded, seated for six or seven, and where the food and the conversation end up. It is a step down to the swim platform from here rather than a walk.

The bow carries sun pads for three or four lying down, and it is the best seat under way — you are ahead of the engine noise with the Marina towers passing overhead on the way out.

The flybridge holds four or five with the best view on the boat and the most wind. It is where most groups end up for the second hour, and it is the coldest seat after sunset in January.

Below is an air-conditioned saloon and two cabins, which matter less as bedrooms than as somewhere to change, put a bag, or sit out the middle of an August afternoon.

What it is right for

A first charter

Twelve guests is the most common group size on this coast and two hours is exactly the right amount of finding out whether you like being on a boat. At AED 750 an hour it is also the cheapest way to do that without buying a seat on somebody else's cruise.

Eight to twelve people

Ten aboard is the sweet spot: everyone has somewhere to sit, nobody queues for the ladder, and at AED 2,250 for three hours it works out at AED 225 each. Twelve is the licensed limit and the boat is full but not uncomfortable.

Getting close in

At 48ft this is the boat that gets furthest into the shallow water behind the Palm crescent and closest along the Marina waterfront. The larger boats in the fleet keep more offshore because they draw more and turn wider.

What it is not right for

Anything over twelve people, which is a legal limit rather than a matter of squeezing, and any group that wants a served meal at a table — there is no galley aboard and catering arrives prepared. If half your guest list is over sixty or the forecast is breezy, the 62ft rides the chop noticeably better.

A charter on the Azure Pearl

Charter time runs berth to berth, so the clock below starts when the lines come off rather than when you arrive. Timings are for a three-hour booking and shift with the length you take.

  1. 15 minutes before

Boarding at the berth. Shoes off at the gangway, the crew take bags and the cool box aboard, and the safety brief runs about two minutes. The clock has not started.

  2. 0:00

Lines off. The Marina channel at idle speed for twelve minutes, towers close on both banks. Everyone is on the bow for this and it is where most of the photographs happen.

  3. 0:15

Past the breakwater and the boat opens up. Bluewaters and Ain Dubai to starboard within five minutes, then the JBR shoreline. The flybridge fills first.

  4. 0:35

The Palm crescent. On a three-hour charter the anchor goes down here in flat water behind the breakwater: about ten minutes to set it properly, then the ladder, snorkels and floats come out.

  5. 1:15

Forty minutes at anchor, of which roughly twenty is actually in the water. Lunch or whatever you brought happens here, with the engines off.

  6. 2:15

Under way again, taking the coast slowly. On a sunset booking this is where the light lands, off the seaward side.

  7. 2:45

Back into the Marina channel with the towers lit. The best twenty minutes of an evening charter, and the part nobody expects. Alongside at the hour you booked.

Azure Pearl against the rest of the fleet

The 55ft Marina Lyra costs AED 300 more an hour and buys four more guest places and a proper saloon; take it if your headcount is thirteen to sixteen or you are chartering in high summer. The 62ft Desert Wind is nearly double the rate and a different proposition — more deck than a group of twelve can use. For twelve or fewer, this is the boat, and the money is better spent on a third hour than on length.

FAQ

Questions about the Azure Pearl

How much does the Azure Pearl cost to charter?

AED 750 per hour, with a 2 hour minimum: so AED 1,500 for the shortest charter. Crew, fuel and marina fees are inside that rate, and there is no separate booking fee.

How many guests can the Azure Pearl carry?

Up to 12. That number comes from the vessel licence rather than from deck space, it includes children and infants, and a captain cannot exceed it. Give us your real headcount and we will move you up a size if it is close.

How big is the Azure Pearl?

48 feet, built as a Majesty 48, with 2 cabins and a crew of 2.

Can we swim from the Azure Pearl?

Yes, on any charter of three hours or more. We anchor in sheltered water behind the Palm Jumeirah crescent or off the World Islands and put out the swim ladder, snorkels and floating mats. A 2 hour charter stays under way. There is not time to anchor properly.

What is included with the Azure Pearl?

Captain and crew, fuel, all marina and departure fees, chilled water, soft drinks and ice, swim equipment, life jackets in adult and children's sizes, and a Bluetooth sound system. Catering and any extras are agreed in writing beforehand.
