Booking a dhow cruise in Dubai, step by step

Booking a dhow cruise in Dubai takes about five minutes: pick one of the four departure points, confirm the date and headcount, and pay per person, from AED 99 on the Creek to AED 149 on the Water Canal, dinner included. A day's notice is enough outside December and January.

The short version

  • Four routes: Creek AED 99, Al Seef AED 119, Marina AED 129, Water Canal AED 149.
  • Boarding is 19:30 for a 20:00 sailing on most routes, back by 22:00.
  • Children under five sail free; five to elevens pay half.
  • Boarding closes ten minutes before departure and the boat does not wait.
  • Groups over about twenty are cheaper per head hiring a whole dhow, from AED 9,000 for two hours.

Step one: choose the route, not the price

The four Dubai dhow routes are genuinely different trips and the AED 50 between cheapest and dearest is the least important difference. The Creek runs through old Dubai past the souks and the working cargo wharfage. The Marina runs the modern skyline. Al Seef is the Creek from the restored Bur Dubai bank. The Water Canal goes through Business Bay under the waterfall bridge.

For a first visit to Dubai, the Creek. For the skyline and the newest boats, the Marina. For the easiest boarding with parking and somewhere to sit beforehand, Al Seef.

Step two: check what the ticket includes

A standard dhow ticket is two hours with a buffet dinner, unlimited soft drinks and live entertainment. If any of those three are missing from a quote, it is not the standard product and the price is not comparable.

  • Two hours on the water, boarding thirty minutes before departure
  • Buffet dinner with a vegetarian counter laid out separately
  • Unlimited soft drinks, water, tea and Arabic coffee
  • Live entertainment, usually tanoura, on most sailings
  • Hotel transfer, if you want it, at about AED 40 a head extra

Step three: confirm the boarding point and the time

Boarding is typically 19:30 for a 20:00 departure, back alongside at 22:00. The Creek boats often run half an hour later. Get the exact boarding point as a map pin rather than a district name. Deira in particular has several jetties within a few hundred metres of each other and they are not interchangeable.

Boarding closes ten minutes before the sailing time. A dhow carrying a hundred and fifty people does not wait for one party, and there is no refund for missing it.

Step four: pay, and know what you have bought

Dhow cruises are sold per person and confirmed by voucher or message. Children under five go free and five to elevens pay half on every route. Groups above about twenty should ask about private hire of a whole boat instead. That starts around AED 9,000 for two hours and takes up to a hundred guests, which works out cheaper per head.

A day's notice is normally enough. In December and January, and over Eid, give it a week. Those are the only periods where the shared boats genuinely sell out.

Five things worth checking before you pay

None of these are exotic, and all of them are the difference between a good evening and a complaint.

  • Which bank you board from, as a pin, not just "Creek" or "Marina"
  • Whether the price is per person or per boat
  • Whether alcohol is served, if that matters to your evening. Most dhows do not
  • Whether upper-deck seating is open on your sailing
  • What happens if you are late, and whether the ticket moves to another date

The four routes, compared properly

Price is the last thing to choose on, because the four routes are different evenings rather than four grades of the same one. What separates them is what you look at for two hours, how easy the boarding is, and how new the boat is.

The Creek is the historic one and the cheapest. You pass the gold and spice souks, the abra crossings and the wooden cargo dhows still loading for Iran and East Africa, which is a working port rather than a display. The boats are traditional and the oldest of the four fleets. Al Seef is the same water boarded from the restored Bur Dubai side, with newer boats and a far more pleasant place to wait.

The Marina is the modern counterpart: two hours of towers, Ain Dubai and the Bluewaters frontage, on the newest and largest boats. The Water Canal is the newest route of all, running through Business Bay under the illuminated waterfall bridge, and it is the one Dubai residents pick most often.

  • Creek, AED 99: old Dubai, souks and cargo wharfage, traditional boats, boards in Deira
  • Al Seef, AED 119: same water, newer boat, easier boarding and better waiting area
  • Marina, AED 129: modern skyline, largest boats, boards at Marina Walk
  • Water Canal, AED 149: Business Bay and the waterfall bridge, newest route

What a dhow evening is actually like

Worth setting expectations, because a dhow cruise is a shared coach tour on water and people who book it expecting a private charter are disappointed for the wrong reasons. There will be a hundred to a hundred and fifty people aboard. Seating is at fixed tables, assigned on arrival, and the buffet opens about twenty minutes after departure.

The entertainment is usually a tanoura dancer at around the halfway point, sometimes with a magician or a musician on the larger boats. It is family-oriented and it is loud enough that the upper deck is the quieter place to be. The food is a competent hotel-style buffet (grills, rice, salads, a vegetarian counter and a dessert table) rather than anything you would travel for.

What you are buying for AED 99 to AED 149 is two hours on the water at night with dinner included, at a price no private boat can approach. Judged as that, it is very good value. Judged as a restaurant with a view, it is not.

When a private dhow is the better booking

The crossover is around twenty guests. Below that, shared tickets are cheaper and the fixed seating is not a real problem. Above it, hiring a whole dhow starts to make sense on price alone: from about AED 9,000 for two hours on a boat taking up to a hundred, which is AED 90 a head at forty guests and AED 45 at a hundred.

What changes beyond the money is control. A private dhow means your own boarding time, your own menu, your own music, and no strangers at the next table. For a company dinner, a large family gathering or a birthday where you want to make a speech, that is the difference between an event and an outing.

It also needs more notice: two to three weeks rather than a day, and longer over the December and January peak.

Getting there, parking and the transfer question

Boarding points are the single most common thing to get wrong, and Deira is the worst offender: there are several jetties within a few hundred metres and a taxi driver given "Dubai Creek" will not necessarily choose yours. Ask for the pin and send it to the driver rather than describing the area.

Parking is straightforward at Al Seef and at Dubai Marina, both of which have paid multi-storey parking within a short walk. It is harder on the Deira side of the Creek, where street parking fills from about seven in the evening. The Water Canal boarding point has parking but the approach through Business Bay is slow in evening traffic.

Hotel transfer is offered on most routes at around AED 40 a head each way. For two people it is rarely worth it against a taxi. For a group of six or more, or for anyone staying out towards Deira Creek, it usually is: mainly because it removes the boarding-point problem entirely.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How do you book a dhow cruise in Dubai?

Choose one of the four routes, send the date and the number of guests, and pay per person. AED 99 on the Creek up to AED 149 on the Water Canal, dinner included. Confirmation comes as a voucher with a boarding pin. A day's notice is usually enough.

How far in advance should you book a dhow cruise?

One day outside peak. A week in December and January and over Eid, which are the only periods when the shared boats actually sell out. Private hire of a whole dhow needs two to three weeks.

What time do Dubai dhow cruises board?

Usually 19:30 for a 20:00 departure, returning about 22:00. Creek sailings often run half an hour later. Boarding closes ten minutes before departure.

Do dhow cruise tickets include dinner?

Yes, on the standard product: a buffet with grills, biryani, mezze, salads and dessert, plus unlimited soft drinks and hot drinks. Sightseeing-only tickets exist on some routes at around AED 70 but are not the usual offer.

Can you book a dhow cruise on the same day?

Usually yes, outside December, January and Eid. Message us rather than book online for a same-day sailing. Availability on the shared boats changes hour to hour and a live answer is faster than a form.

Which Dubai dhow cruise is the best one?

The Creek at AED 99 for a first visit: old Dubai, the souks and the working cargo wharfage. The Marina at AED 129 for the modern skyline and the newest boats. Al Seef at AED 119 if easy boarding and parking matter most.

How much does it cost to hire a whole dhow in Dubai?

From about AED 9,000 for two hours on a boat taking up to a hundred guests. That is AED 90 a head at forty people and AED 45 at a hundred, so private hire becomes cheaper than shared tickets somewhere around twenty guests.

Do children pay for a dhow cruise in Dubai?

Children under five sail free on every route. Five to elevens pay half price. Twelve and over pay the adult fare.
