Private dhow hire in Dubai: a whole boat for a hundred

Private hire of a whole dhow in Dubai starts at about AED 9,000 for two hours and carries up to a hundred guests with a buffet dinner included, roughly AED 90 a head. For any group above about thirty-five, nothing else on this coast is close on cost, because no charter yacht in Dubai carries that many people.

The short version

  • From AED 9,000 for two hours, up to 100 guests, dinner included, about AED 90 each.
  • The largest charter yacht in our fleet carries 35, so above that a dhow is the only option.
  • Marina dhows are newer and cost from about AED 12,000; Creek dhows are cheaper.
  • Two to three weeks' notice, and longer for a weekend between October and April.
  • Boarding a hundred guests takes twenty-five minutes, not five. Build it into the timing.

Why a dhow rather than two yachts

Above thirty-five guests you have run out of yacht, and a whole dhow is what is left. The largest boat in our fleet is an 85ft licensed for thirty-five, and the licensed number is a hard limit. The two remaining options are chartering two boats to run together, or hiring a whole dhow.

Two yachts for seventy guests costs somewhere north of AED 20,000 for four hours and splits the party across two decks that cannot easily talk to each other. A single dhow takes all seventy for a fraction of that, with everyone in one place. For a wedding, a company dinner or a large birthday, that is usually the deciding factor rather than the money.

What private hire includes

The whole boat, both decks, for the agreed hours, with the crew, the buffet and the sound system. Because the boat is yours, the things a shared sailing fixes become yours to set: the departure time, the menu, the music, the seating and whether there is a speech.

  • The whole vessel: two decks, typically 80 to 150 capacity
  • Buffet dinner set to a menu agreed beforehand, vegetarian included
  • Unlimited soft drinks, water, tea and Arabic coffee
  • Sound system and a microphone for speeches
  • Decoration, cake and a photographer arranged at supplier cost

Which route, and what it changes

Marina dhows are the newest and largest, with the best upper decks, and private hire starts around AED 12,000 for two hours. The route is the modern skyline: the tower channel, JBR and Ain Dubai.

Creek dhows are older, plainer and cheaper (from about AED 9,000), and the route is old Dubai past the souks and the cargo wharfage. For a company dinner with international guests, the Creek is more interesting. For a wedding where the photographs matter, the Marina.

The Water Canal boats sit between the two and are the most sheltered of all, which is worth knowing if you have elderly guests or anyone who worries about motion.

Planning notes for a hundred people

Boarding a hundred guests takes about twenty-five minutes, not five. Build it in, and put someone from your side at the gangway with the list.

Give the caterer a final headcount seventy-two hours out; a buffet for a hundred cannot be adjusted on the day. And agree in advance where the cake goes and who cuts it, because a hundred people on two decks do not spontaneously gather.

Two to three weeks' notice is realistic. For a weekend evening between October and April, make it a month.

What it costs as the group grows

The rate is for the boat, so the cost per head falls the whole way up to capacity. This is the opposite of shared tickets, where a hundred guests cost a hundred times AED 99, and it is the entire reason private hire makes sense at scale.

The crossover against buying shared tickets sits somewhere around twenty to twenty-five guests, depending on the route. Below that, buy tickets. Above it, the whole boat is both cheaper and a completely different evening.

  • 40 guests on a AED 9,000 dhow: AED 225 each
  • 70 guests: AED 129 each
  • 100 guests: AED 90 each
  • 100 shared Creek tickets, for comparison: AED 9,900, on a boat with strangers
  • Extra hours are charged pro rata; four hours is roughly double two

Weddings, company dinners and what each needs

The three things people hire whole dhows for want different arrangements from the same boat. A wedding or engagement needs the photographs, which means the Marina route, an earlier departure to catch light on the way out, and a cleared area of deck for the cake and the speeches. Decoration matters here more than anywhere else and is worth the supplier cost.

A company dinner needs the opposite: a route that gives guests something to talk about, which is the Creek, and a seating plan that mixes people rather than letting departments cluster. A microphone that works is not optional, and one short speech early beats a long one at the end when half the boat is on the upper deck.

A large birthday or family gathering needs neither, and mostly needs food that arrives on time and somewhere for children to be. The Water Canal boats suit this best: most sheltered, shortest transfers, and the least walking for older guests.

The questions to settle before you pay a deposit

Private hire has more moving parts than a ticket, and almost every problem traces back to one of these being assumed rather than agreed. Settle them in writing at the quote stage.

  • Exact boarding point as a map pin, and where guests park
  • Boarding window and the hard departure time
  • Final headcount deadline, usually seventy-two hours, and what happens if it drops
  • Menu, including vegetarian, halal and any allergies, in writing
  • Whether alcohol is permitted on that vessel, and on what terms
  • Who supplies decoration, cake, photographer and sound, and what each costs
  • What happens in the event of weather, and whether the date moves or the money returns

What the boat is actually like

A Dubai dhow is a wooden two-deck vessel between about twenty and thirty-five metres, built on the shape of the trading boats that worked this coast for a century and fitted out for dining. The lower deck is enclosed and air-conditioned with fixed tables; the upper deck is open, canopied, and where most of your guests will end up once dinner is cleared.

There are toilets on both decks on the larger boats and on the lower deck only on the smaller ones, which matters at a hundred guests. There is a galley aboard, so food is cooked and held on the boat rather than delivered cold. The sound system is adequate for background music and speeches and is not a club rig. If you want a DJ and volume, say so, because it is a hire item rather than a fitting.

Motion is minimal on all four routes. These are sheltered waters (a canal, a creek or a marina channel), and the boat is heavy and slow. Guests who are nervous about seasickness on a yacht are almost never troubled on a dhow.

Running the evening on the night

The thing that separates a smooth hundred-guest dhow from a chaotic one is having a running order and one person holding it. Not a formal schedule: a sequence everybody senior knows.

What works: guests aboard and drinks circulating for the first twenty minutes while the boat leaves, buffet opens once you are under way and the view has settled, speeches at the halfway point when everyone is seated and fed, cake after, and the last half hour left alone for people to be on the upper deck as the lights go past. Trying to do speeches during boarding or the cake in the last five minutes both fail for the same reason. The boat is doing something else.

Put someone from your side at the gangway with the guest list, and someone else responsible for telling the crew when you are ready for each stage. The crew will run it well if they know what you want; they cannot guess it from a hundred people on two decks.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to hire a private dhow in Dubai?

From about AED 9,000 for two hours on a Creek dhow carrying up to a hundred guests with a buffet dinner, roughly AED 90 a head. Marina dhows, which are newer and larger, start around AED 12,000.

How many people fit on a private dhow?

Typically 80 to 150 depending on the vessel, across two decks. That is the licensed capacity and it includes children. For comparison, the largest charter yacht in Dubai carries about 35.

Is hiring a whole dhow cheaper than a yacht for a big group?

Substantially, above about thirty-five guests. At that size a yacht is not an option at all: no charter yacht in Dubai is licensed for a hundred people, so the comparison is a dhow against two or three yachts running together, and the dhow wins on both cost and coherence.

Can you choose the menu on a private dhow?

Yes. The buffet is set with you beforehand, including vegetarian and any dietary requirements, with a final headcount seventy-two hours before sailing. Alcohol is by prior arrangement and most dhows do not serve it.

How much notice is needed for private dhow hire?

Two to three weeks normally, and a month for a weekend evening between October and April. That is longer than a shared ticket needs because the vessel comes off sale for the whole sailing.

At what group size does private dhow hire become cheaper than tickets?

Around twenty to twenty-five guests, depending on the route. At forty guests a AED 9,000 dhow is AED 225 each; at a hundred it is AED 90 each, against AED 99 for a shared Creek ticket, and you have the boat to yourselves.

Can you have a wedding or engagement party on a dhow in Dubai?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons for private hire. The Marina route suits it best for photographs. Book an earlier departure to catch the light on the way out, and agree deck space for the cake and speeches in advance.

How long does it take to board a hundred guests onto a dhow?

About twenty-five minutes. Build it into the timing rather than the departure slot, and put someone from your side at the gangway with the guest list.
