62ft vs 85ft yacht charter: where the extra money goes

62ft vs 85ft yacht charter, in one number: the 85ft costs AED 3,200 an hour against the 62ft's AED 1,400, more than double, and the extra buys thirteen more guests, three more crew, a jacuzzi, formal dining for eighteen and a four-hour minimum instead of three. Below about twenty-five guests it is money spent on presence rather than capacity.

The short version

  • 62ft: AED 1,400/hr, 22 guests, 3 crew, 3-hour minimum. AED 4,200 minimum charter.
  • 85ft: AED 3,200/hr, 35 guests, 5 crew, 4-hour minimum. AED 12,800 minimum charter.
  • The minimum charter, not the hourly rate, is the real jump: AED 4,200 to AED 12,800.
  • Under 25 guests, the 62ft is almost always the right boat.
  • The fifth crew member on the 85ft is a host who does nothing but look after guests. That is what people remember.

62ft vs 85ft: the number that actually decides it

People compare the hourly rates, but the minimum charter length is what makes the difference material. The 62ft has a three-hour minimum, so the smallest charter is AED 4,200. The 85ft has a four-hour minimum, so the smallest is AED 12,800.

That is a factor of three on the smallest booking you can make, not a factor of two on the rate. If the budget conversation is going to happen, it happens there.

What the 85ft has that the 62ft does not

Four cabins rather than three, a saloon with formal dining for eighteen, a jacuzzi on the sun deck, a full-width swim platform, and five crew including a host whose entire job is looking after guests rather than running the boat.

That last one is the most underrated. On the 62ft the crew of three are busy; on the 85ft somebody is free to notice that a glass is empty. For client hosting or a wedding, that is what people register afterwards, more than the length.

  • 62ft: 22 guests, 3 cabins, 3 crew, air-conditioned saloon, jet ski alongside
  • 85ft: 35 guests, 4 cabins, 5 crew, sun-deck jacuzzi, dining for 18, onboard chef
  • 62ft minimum: 3 hours, AED 4,200
  • 85ft minimum: 4 hours, AED 12,800

When the 62ft is the right answer

Any group up to about twenty-two, obviously, but also groups of twenty-five where a couple of people can be moved to a different date. Team days, birthdays, family charters, anything where the point is the water rather than the venue.

The 62ft also has the better deck-to-guest ratio in practice. Twenty-two people on a 62ft feel like a party; twenty-two people on an 85ft feel like a small group in a large room, and you have paid for the room.

When the 85ft earns it

Above twenty-five guests, where the 62ft is genuinely full. For a wedding ceremony, where you need somewhere for the couple to change and somewhere for the ceremony that is not the same deck. For a launch or client event, where the boat is the venue and the impression is the product.

And for anything involving a served meal. The 62ft can hold catering; the 85ft has a galley a chef can work in and a table eighteen people can sit at, which is a different evening.

The cost per head, which is the honest comparison

Hourly rates flatter the small boat and minimum charters flatter neither. The number that decides most real bookings is what each guest costs, and on that measure the two boats converge as the group grows.

At full capacity the 85ft is actually the cheaper boat per person. That sounds counterintuitive until you remember you are buying places rather than feet: AED 366 a head for four hours on the 85ft against AED 191 for three hours on the 62ft, for a longer charter with more crew and a jacuzzi.

  • 62ft, 3 hours, 22 guests: AED 4,200, or AED 191 each
  • 62ft, 4 hours, 22 guests: AED 5,600, or AED 255 each
  • 85ft, 4 hours, 35 guests: AED 12,800, or AED 366 each
  • 85ft, 4 hours, 22 guests: AED 12,800, or AED 582 each
  • The 85ft only makes sense per head when it is close to full

How each boat feels under way

An 85ft is noticeably more stable. It carries its weight lower and longer, so a short chop that makes the 62ft move is something the 85ft passes through. On a flat winter morning there is nothing between them; on a breezy afternoon with a metre of sea running, the difference is real and it matters if anyone in the group is prone to seasickness.

The 62ft is the more sociable boat. Everyone is within speaking distance of everyone else, the flybridge and the aft deck are one conversation rather than two, and the swim platform is a step down rather than a walk. On the 85ft a group of twenty spreads across three levels and the party fragments unless you actively gather it.

Speed is similar in practice (both cruise at about 10 knots like everything else in the fleet), and neither is chartered for speed. Where the 85ft wins is range and comfort at anchor; where the 62ft wins is getting close in along the Marina waterfront and into shallower anchorages behind the Palm.

What sits between them, and what sits above

The fleet is not a binary choice. If twenty-two is not quite enough and AED 12,800 is too much, the honest answer is often a different shape of booking rather than a bigger boat. A longer charter on the 62ft, or two boats running together for a group that is going to split anyway.

Above the 85ft, charters are arranged in from partner fleets: 100ft and 35m boats are available with about a week's notice. Those are priced individually rather than from a rate card, and the licensed guest number does not keep rising with length. Most are still licensed for around thirty-five to fifty, because capacity is set by the vessel's certification rather than its size.

Below the 62ft, the 55ft at AED 1,050 an hour for sixteen guests is the boat most people who ask about the 62ft actually want, and it is worth checking your headcount honestly before assuming otherwise.

  • 48ft: AED 750/hr, 12 guests, 2-hour minimum
  • 55ft: AED 1,050/hr, 16 guests, 2-hour minimum
  • 62ft: AED 1,400/hr, 22 guests, 3-hour minimum
  • 85ft: AED 3,200/hr, 35 guests, 4-hour minimum
  • Above 85ft: chartered in from partner fleets, about a week's notice

The mistake people make in both directions

Booking up is the more expensive error and the more common one. A group of eighteen books the 85ft because it sounds better, spends AED 12,800 on a four-hour minimum, and spends the afternoon in about a third of the boat. The same eighteen on the 62ft for four hours is AED 5,600 and a livelier day.

Booking down is rarer and worse when it happens, because it is not recoverable. A group of twenty-six on a 62ft licensed for twenty-two means four people do not sail, not as a negotiation but as a fact, decided at the pontoon by a captain who has no discretion. Count the headcount including children, infants, the photographer and any catering staff, and count it before you pay a deposit rather than the week before.

The rule that survives most conversations: pick the smallest boat your actual headcount fits on, then spend the difference on hours, food or a photographer. Every one of those is more visible on the day than length is.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How much more is an 85ft yacht than a 62ft in Dubai?

AED 3,200 an hour against AED 1,400: more than double. The bigger difference is the minimum charter: AED 12,800 for four hours on the 85ft against AED 4,200 for three hours on the 62ft.

What does an 85ft yacht have that a 62ft does not?

Thirteen more guest places, a fourth cabin, two more crew including a dedicated host, a sun-deck jacuzzi, formal dining for eighteen and a galley a chef can work in.

What size yacht do you need for 25 people in Dubai?

An 85ft, because the 62ft is licensed for twenty-two and the limit is legal rather than about space. If two or three guests can move to another date, the 62ft at AED 4,200 for three hours saves a great deal.

Is a bigger yacht better for a party?

Not automatically. Twenty-two people spread across an 85ft feel sparse; the same group on a 62ft feel like a party. Size helps when the guest list genuinely needs it or when the boat is meant to be the venue.

Can you have a chef on the 62ft?

Catering can be brought aboard and held, but the 62ft has no galley for cooking to order. A chef working through a served menu needs the 85ft.

Which yacht is cheaper per person in Dubai?

At full capacity, the 85ft: AED 366 a head for four hours with 35 aboard, against AED 255 for four hours with 22 on the 62ft. But at 22 guests the 85ft is AED 582 each, so it only wins when it is close to full.

Is a bigger yacht more stable in Dubai waters?

Yes, noticeably. The 85ft carries its weight lower and longer and passes through a short chop that makes the 62ft move. On a flat winter morning there is nothing between them; on a breezy afternoon it matters.

Can you charter a yacht bigger than 85ft in Dubai?

Yes, 100ft and 35m boats are chartered in from partner fleets with about a week's notice and priced individually. Note that the licensed guest number does not keep rising with length. Most are still certified for around 35 to 50.
