How many hours of yacht charter do you actually need?

How many hours of yacht charter you need comes down to whether you want to swim. Three hours is the right answer for most people. Two hours covers the Marina channel, JBR and Bluewaters but cannot anchor. Three adds a forty-minute swim stop off the Palm. Four lets you eat aboard properly, and five reaches the World Islands. On a 48ft those cost AED 1,500, 2,250, 3,000 and 3,750.

The short version

  • 2 hours: Marina, JBR, Bluewaters. No swim stop. AED 1,500 on a 48ft.
  • 3 hours: adds a 40-minute anchor stop off the Palm. AED 2,250. The default.
  • 4 hours: enough to eat aboard without rushing. AED 3,000.
  • 5 hours: reaches the World Islands, 45 minutes offshore. AED 3,750.
  • Charter time runs berth to berth, and the Marina channel costs about twelve minutes each way.

Why two hours cannot include swimming

Charter time runs berth to berth. Clearing the Marina channel takes about twelve minutes at the low speed the channel requires, and coming back in takes the same. That is nearly half an hour of a two-hour charter spent inside the harbour before anything else happens.

Anchoring properly (finding the spot, setting the anchor, getting the ladder down, getting everyone back aboard and stowed) is a twenty-minute overhead around however long you actually spend in the water. Two hours does not have room for it, which is why the crew will decline rather than rush it.

What the third hour buys

The best forty minutes of the day, for AED 750. The boat anchors in the flat water behind the Palm Jumeirah crescent, the engines go off, and the whole character of the charter changes. It stops being a tour and becomes an afternoon.

If you are choosing between a bigger boat for two hours and a smaller boat for three, take the three hours. Almost nobody regrets it and a great many people regret the opposite.

  • 2 hours: sightseeing only, under way throughout
  • 3 hours: one swim stop of about 40 minutes. The most-booked shape
  • 4 hours: swim stop plus a proper meal aboard, unhurried
  • 5 hours: the World Islands, 45 minutes offshore each way
  • 8 hours: full day, or an offshore fishing charter

When two hours is genuinely right

For a sunset charter, where the light window is only about forty minutes wide and the point is the timing rather than the swimming. For client hosting, where two hours is the attention you have. For a first time on the water with someone unsure about boats. And for a couple, where AED 1,500 for two hours is already AED 750 each.

In every one of those cases, adding an hour adds cost without adding much. In most other cases it is the cheapest improvement available.

How far each charter length actually reaches

Hours convert into distance along a fairly predictable stretch of coast, and knowing what each one gets to is more useful than knowing what it costs. Everything below assumes a departure from Dubai Marina at a cruising 10 knots, with the channel transit taken off the top at each end.

The thing worth noticing is how much of a short charter is spent inside the harbour. On a two-hour booking, roughly a quarter of your time is the channel. On a five-hour booking it is a tenth, which is why long charters feel disproportionately better rather than just longer.

  • 12 minutes: clear of the Marina channel and the breakwater
  • 20 minutes: Bluewaters, Ain Dubai and the JBR frontage
  • 25 minutes: the Palm crescent and the sheltered water behind it
  • 35 minutes: Burj Al Arab and the Madinat Jumeirah frontage
  • 45 minutes: the World Islands, genuinely offshore
  • 60 minutes+: Dubai Harbour to Jumeirah and back is a full-day shape

The anchor stop, and why it takes forty minutes

People assume a swim stop is the time spent in the water. It is not. It is the time spent in the water plus a fixed overhead of about twenty minutes that does not shrink however keen everyone is.

The captain has to find water of the right depth with room for the boat to swing, drop and set the anchor properly, and confirm it is holding before anyone gets in. At the other end there is a head count, the ladder up, the anchor recovered and everything stowed before the boat moves. Twenty minutes of that is unavoidable, so a forty-minute stop is twenty minutes of swimming and a sixty-minute stop is forty.

This is the single reason two hours cannot include a swim and three comfortably can. It is not a policy or an upsell; it is arithmetic that a captain cannot argue with.

Matching hours to what you are actually doing

The mistake is choosing hours by budget and then trying to fit the day into them. It works far better the other way round. Decide what the afternoon is for, and the number of hours follows almost automatically.

  • Sunset and photographs: 2 hours
  • Client hosting or a first time on a boat, 2 hours
  • A birthday, a family day, most groups: 3 hours
  • Anything with a proper meal aboard: 4 hours
  • Swimming as the main event, or the World Islands, 5 hours
  • A full day with two stops and lunch, 8 hours

Minimums, and why they differ by boat

Every boat carries a minimum charter length and it rises with size: two hours on the 48ft and 55ft, three on the 62ft, four on the 85ft. It is not a weekend surcharge and it does not move.

The reason is that the fixed costs of a charter (crew call-out, fuelling, provisioning, cleaning down afterwards, and moving a large boat off and back onto its berth) are almost the same for two hours as for four. On an 85ft with five crew, a two-hour booking would cost more to run than it earns.

The practical consequence when comparing boats is to compare minimum charters rather than hourly rates. The 62ft at AED 1,400 an hour looks close to the 55ft at AED 1,050 until you notice the minimums are three hours and two, which makes the smallest bookings AED 4,200 and AED 2,100.

What a longer charter changes that a bigger boat does not

When budget is fixed, the choice is usually between more hours on a smaller boat and fewer hours on a larger one. AED 4,200 buys three hours on the 62ft or five and a half hours on the 48ft, and for most groups the second is the better day.

Length buys you presence and capacity. Hours buy you the swim stop, the meal, the second anchorage, and the part of the afternoon where nobody is watching the clock. Guests notice the second set far more than the first. Almost nobody comes back from a charter talking about the length of the boat, and almost everybody talks about the swim.

The exception is a genuine headcount problem. If you have twenty guests, no number of hours on a 48ft licensed for twelve solves it, and the bigger boat is not a preference but a requirement.

Can you extend on the day?

Sometimes, and it is always worth asking before you leave rather than when you are already an hour late back. If the boat has no booking behind yours, an extra hour is usually possible at the standard rate, agreed with the captain and added to the balance.

In season, and on weekend evenings especially, the answer is usually no. The boat is going straight back out. Between October and April assume you cannot extend and book the hours you want up front. In summer, and particularly on a weekday morning, extending is often straightforward.

What is never possible is shortening. If you come back early, the charter was still the hours you booked, and the minimum for that boat applies regardless.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How many hours should a yacht charter be in Dubai?

Three hours for most people: enough for the Marina, the Palm and a forty-minute swim stop, at AED 2,250 on a 48ft. Two hours works for a sunset run or client hosting but cannot include swimming.

Can you swim on a two-hour yacht charter?

No. Clearing the Marina channel takes about twelve minutes each way, and anchoring adds a twenty-minute overhead. Two hours has no room for it, so crews will not attempt it.

How long does it take to reach the Palm from Dubai Marina?

About twenty minutes at cruising speed. A three-hour charter reaches the Palm, anchors for forty minutes and comes back without hurrying.

How long do you need to reach the World Islands?

Five hours. The archipelago is about four kilometres offshore, which is forty to forty-five minutes each way, leaving a long anchor stop in the middle. Four hours reaches it but turns straight round.

Is the minimum charter length the same on every boat?

No. Two hours on the 48ft and 55ft, three on the 62ft and four on the 85ft. The minimum is set by the boat rather than by the day of the week.

Why does a swim stop take forty minutes?

Because roughly twenty minutes of it is overhead. The captain has to find depth with room to swing, set the anchor and confirm it is holding before anyone gets in, then head count, ladder up and anchor recovered at the end. A forty-minute stop is about twenty minutes actually swimming.

Can you extend a yacht charter on the day in Dubai?

Often in summer and on weekday mornings, rarely on a weekend evening in season. It depends on whether the boat has a booking behind yours. Ask the captain before you leave the berth, not when you are already running late.

Does charter time include getting out of Dubai Marina?

Yes. Charter time runs berth to berth, and the channel transit is about twelve minutes each way at the low speed the harbour requires. On a two-hour charter that is nearly half an hour of your booking.
