Can you book a solo yacht charter in Dubai?

Yes. Charters in Dubai are priced per boat, so one person can book a yacht licensed for twelve at the standard rate: AED 1,500 for two hours on a 48ft. Nothing is cheaper for a solo booking. If cost matters, a shared dhow cruise at AED 99 or a RIB tour seat at AED 150 puts you on the water alone for a fraction of that.

The short version

  • A solo charter costs the same as a full boat: AED 1,500 for two hours on a 48ft.
  • Shared alternatives sold per seat: dhow cruise AED 99, RIB tour AED 150.
  • You still cannot drive it. The captain is included and required.
  • Photographers and content shoots are the most common genuine solo charter.
  • Driving it yourself needs a UAE marine licence: a separate two-day course and test.

The pricing, plainly

A private charter takes a boat off the market for those hours. Whether one person or twelve step aboard makes no difference to the operator's cost, so it makes no difference to the price. One person on the 48ft pays AED 1,500 for two hours, exactly as a group of twelve would.

No operator in Dubai offers a solo discount, and one offering a suspiciously low private rate is usually selling a seat on a shared boat.

The cheaper ways to be on the water alone

Shared products are sold per seat and work perfectly well for one person. A Creek dhow dinner cruise is AED 99 including dinner. A RIB tour seat is AED 150 for an hour to the Burj Al Arab. A jet ski is AED 250 for thirty minutes, and riding alone costs the same as riding two-up.

None of these require a group, and nobody will think anything of a solo booking, shared boats carry solo travellers constantly.

  • Dhow dinner cruise: AED 99, two hours, dinner included
  • RIB tour seat: AED 150, one hour, Burj Al Arab stop
  • Jet ski: AED 250 for 30 minutes, same price riding alone
  • Private charter: AED 1,500 for two hours, whatever the headcount

When a solo private charter is the right call

Photography and content shoots, most commonly. A photographer who needs the boat positioned in a specific place at a specific minute cannot do that from a scheduled sailing at any price.

Also for a proposal set-up, where one person boards early to arrange things before the other arrives. And occasionally simply for the quiet. A boat at anchor off the Palm with nobody else aboard is a genuinely rare thing to buy in this city.

What it does not buy is driving it. Every charter comes with a captain, and a solo booking does not change that. Driving a boat yourself needs a UAE marine licence, which is a separate two-day course and test.

What a solo charter is actually like

Quieter than people expect, and slightly more sociable. On a boat built for twelve with one guest aboard, the crew of two are not busy, and the usual result is a conversation rather than service: captains on this coast know the water, the buildings and the history of both, and a solo guest gets all of that instead of a group getting none of it.

The boat also feels enormous. A 48ft aft deck seats seven comfortably and a bow holds four lying down; with one person aboard you can move between all of them freely, lie on the bow for the whole run out, and take photographs with nobody in them.

The swim stop is the part that changes most. No queue for the ladder, no waiting, no negotiating how long to stay. Forty minutes at anchor behind the Palm crescent alone is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to buy in a city of three and a half million people.

The photography and content case, in detail

This is the most common commercial reason for a solo booking and it works because a private boat is a positionable camera platform, which no scheduled sailing is.

What you can ask for: the boat held in a specific position, turned to a specific angle, at a specific time. Repeat passes of the same stretch. Engines off for a still frame. A departure timed to the minute against the light rather than against a shift rota. None of that is available on a shared cruise at any price, and it is why AED 1,500 for two hours is cheap against a wasted shoot day.

What to say when booking: bring the shot list, the direction of light you need, and whether a drone is involved. A drone needs a permit and about a week of lead time. Say so at the enquiry stage rather than when the operator arrives at the pontoon.

  • Boat held in position, turned to a chosen angle, engines off
  • Repeat passes of the same stretch of coastline
  • Departure timed to the light rather than to a fixed slot
  • Drone work: permit required, about a week's notice
  • Send the shot list at enquiry; it changes the route and the hour

Splitting a boat with people you have not met

One question that comes up from solo travellers is whether a charter can be shared with strangers to split the cost. The honest answer is that we do not run shared charters and neither do most private operators, because a private boat sold by the seat is a different licence and a different product.

What exists instead is the shared fleet (dhow cruises, RIB tours, catamaran dinner cruises), which are exactly that, sold per person, and where a solo booking is completely routine. If splitting the cost is the goal, that is the product rather than a discounted charter.

The other route people find is informal: hostel and expat groups in Dubai organise boat days regularly, and joining one of those is a genuine way onto a private boat at per-head cost. That is arranged between the guests rather than through us, and the person who books remains responsible for the booking.

Booking one, and the questions you will be asked

A solo enquiry occasionally produces a pause, and it is worth knowing why so it does not read as reluctance. Operators ask about headcount because it decides the boat, and an answer of one is unusual enough that the follow-up question is usually what the charter is for, not out of nosiness but because a solo photography shoot, a proposal set-up and a quiet afternoon want three different boats and three different routes.

Answer it plainly and the booking proceeds exactly as any other would. The deposit is the same twenty-five percent, the terms are the same, and nothing about the rate changes.

The one practical note is the smallest boat. There is no advantage to booking the 48ft over anything larger on comfort grounds when you are alone, but there is a considerable one on price. AED 750 an hour against AED 3,200 buys the identical coastline and the identical light.

If you want to drive one yourself

Worth separating from chartering entirely, because the two get conflated. Every charter in Dubai is crewed and the captain is not optional. It is a condition of the vessel's licence and insurance, not a service upsell.

Driving your own boat in UAE waters requires a marine licence issued after a course and a test, typically run over two days and covering navigation rules, safety equipment, VHF procedure and a practical assessment. It is genuinely achievable for a resident and largely pointless for a visitor, since the licence is the easy part and access to a boat is the hard one.

The middle option most people actually want is a jet ski, where no licence is needed as a guest with a licensed operator and a guide, the driver must be sixteen or over, and you are steering something yourself within an hour of arriving.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can one person charter a yacht in Dubai?

Yes. Charters are priced per boat, so one person can book a yacht licensed for twelve at the standard rate: AED 1,500 for two hours on a 48ft. There is no solo discount because the boat is off the market either way.

What is the cheapest way to go on the water alone in Dubai?

A shared dhow dinner cruise at AED 99 including dinner, a RIB tour seat at AED 150 for an hour, or a jet ski at AED 250 for thirty minutes. All are sold per seat and take solo bookings routinely.

Can you drive a charter boat yourself?

No. Every charter comes with a certified captain, and that does not change for a solo booking. Driving a boat yourself in UAE waters requires a UAE marine licence, which takes a two-day course and a test.

Do solo travellers book boat trips in Dubai?

Constantly, on the shared products. Dhow cruises, RIB tours and jet skis all carry solo guests as a matter of course, and nothing about booking one alone is unusual.

Why would someone charter a whole boat for one person?

Photography and content shoots, mostly. A scheduled sailing cannot put the boat where a shot needs it. Also proposal set-ups, where one person boards early to arrange things before the other arrives.

Can you share a private charter with strangers to split the cost?

Not through us, and not with most private operators. A private boat sold by the seat is a different licence and product. The shared fleet exists for exactly that: dhow cruises, RIB tours and catamaran dinners, all sold per person.

How do you get a boat licence in Dubai?

A course and test typically run over two days, covering navigation rules, safety equipment, VHF procedure and a practical assessment. It is achievable for a resident and largely pointless for a visitor. The licence is the easy part, access to a boat is the hard one.

What is a solo yacht charter actually like?

Quieter and more sociable than expected. With one guest on a boat built for twelve, the crew are not busy and you generally get a conversation about the coast rather than service. The swim stop with no queue for the ladder is the part people remember.
