December in Dubai: what it is worth, and what it is not

December in Dubai is worth it for the weather and not for the price: daytime air sits around 24°C with low humidity, the sea is about 22°C, and everything outdoors that is unusable in August works — but hotel rates roughly double against October and the last fortnight of the month is the busiest of the year. The first two weeks of December are the best value fortnight in the entire peak season.

The short version

  • Weather: about 24°C by day, 15°C at night, sea around 22°C. The best of the year.
  • Hotel rates roughly double against October and peak in the last fortnight.
  • 1 to 15 December is the value window: peak weather, pre-peak pricing.
  • The last two weeks are the busiest of the year at every attraction on the coast.
  • Sunset is about 5.35pm, so the evening starts early and lasts longer.

What December in Dubai is actually like

It is the month the city was designed for. Daytime air around 24°C, humidity low, nights around 15°C, and roughly two rainy days in the whole month. Everything that exists outdoors here — the beaches, the promenades, the desert, the water — is comfortable from morning to night, which is true of almost none of the year between May and September.

The full numbers, including sea temperature and what it feels like offshore after dark, are in Dubai weather in December and January.

What it costs, and why

Roughly double an October hotel rate for the same room, and more than that in the last fortnight. Flights follow the same curve. This is the straightforward consequence of the best weather of the year coinciding with the northern hemisphere's main holiday, and no amount of planning removes it.

What does not double is the things you do once you are here. A charter is the same AED 750 an hour for the 48ft in December as in June, restaurants are priced as they always are, and the metro costs what it costs. The premium is almost entirely in the bed and the seat that got you here.

Which is a useful thing to know, because it means a shorter December trip is far better value than a longer one — the fixed cost is the accommodation.

The two halves of the month

1 to 15 December is one of the best fortnights of the year to be in Dubai. The weather is already at its best, National Day on 2 December fills the city with something worth watching, and the holiday pricing has not properly started.

16 to 31 December is the busiest and most expensive fortnight of the year. Every attraction is at capacity, restaurants need booking, and the charter fleet is committed. It is still a good time to be here; it is simply the version of it that costs the most and involves the most queueing.

If the dates are movable at all, moving them earlier in the month is the single highest-value decision available.

  • 1–15 December: peak weather, pre-peak prices, National Day on the 2nd.
  • 16–31 December: the busiest and priciest fortnight of the year.
  • 25 December: a normal working day in the UAE. Everything is open.
  • 31 December: the coastal fireworks, and the one night everything sells out.

What is better in December than at any other time

Anything on the water. The sea is calm, the mornings are flat, the haze that sits on the horizon for much of the year is largely gone, and being on a deck for four hours is pleasant rather than an endurance exercise.

Anything in the desert, for the same reasons in reverse: an August desert trip is a sunset activity and a December one is an all-day one.

And walking. Dubai is a difficult city to walk for most of the year and a genuinely good one in December — the Marina promenade, the Creek, Al Seef and the canal are all better on foot in this month than in any other.

What December does not fix

It does not make the city cheap, it does not make the last fortnight quiet, and it does not make the sea warm — 22°C is swimmable and it is not August.

It also does not shorten the day much. Sunset is about 5.35pm, which is earlier than visitors expect and reshapes an itinerary: the outdoor part of the day ends before six and the evening is long. That is a feature if you plan for it and an annoyance if you do not.

Who should come in a different month

Anyone whose priority is price should look at October or February. Both have essentially December's weather — October is a little warmer, February is nearly identical — at a fraction of the accommodation premium. February in particular is the month residents rate highest and visitors book least.

Anyone who wants a warm sea should come in October, when it is still around 30°C.

Anyone who wants an empty city should come in May, and accept the trade.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is December a good time to visit Dubai?

It is the best month for weather — around 24°C by day, low humidity, calm sea — and the most expensive. Hotel rates roughly double against October, with the last fortnight the busiest of the year.

Which is the best fortnight of December in Dubai?

1 to 15 December. The weather is already at its best, National Day on the 2nd is worth being here for, and the holiday pricing has not properly started.

Is the sea warm enough to swim in Dubai in December?

Yes, at around 22°C. It is cooler than the air, which is the reverse of the summer, so most people take a moment on the ladder and then swim perfectly comfortably.

Do prices for activities go up in December in Dubai?

Mostly no. Charter rates, restaurants and transport are priced as they are the rest of the year. The December premium is almost entirely in hotels and flights.

What time does it get dark in Dubai in December?

About 5.35pm all month, which is earlier than most visitors expect. The outdoor part of the day finishes before six and the evening is correspondingly long.

Is February a better month than December in Dubai?

For value, clearly. February has nearly identical weather at a fraction of the accommodation premium, and it is the month residents rate highest and visitors book least.
