A two-hour format for hosting clients on a yacht in Dubai

The format that works for client hosting on a yacht in Dubai is two hours, sixteen people or fewer, boarding at 4.30pm, with food that can be eaten standing up — the boat back in the berth before anyone has to decide whether to leave. It costs AED 2,100 on the 55ft, and the reason it works is that it is short enough that nobody is trapped.

The short version

  • Two hours, boarding around 4.30pm from October to April. Sunset lands mid-charter.
  • AED 2,100 on the 55ft for sixteen guests, or AED 1,500 on the 48ft for twelve.
  • Keep it under sixteen. Above that the conversation splits and the point is lost.
  • Canapés, not a sit-down. A meal turns a hosting charter into a lunch with a view.
  • No presentation, no screen, no speeches. The boat is the argument.

Why client hosting on a yacht works in Dubai at all

Because it is unlike the alternative and it is not expensive. A private room in a good hotel with a set menu for sixteen is not far off AED 2,100, and everybody in the room has been to that room. Two hours on a boat off the Marina is the same money and is the thing they describe to somebody else afterwards.

It also solves the specific problem of hosting in this city, which is that a restaurant dinner runs three hours and commits everybody to a table. A charter has a hard end. The boat comes back, everybody gets off, and the evening closes cleanly at a time everyone knew in advance.

The two-hour format, hour by hour

Board at 4.30pm from October to April, an hour later in the shoulder months. Drinks and canapés start on deck immediately — the boat leaves the berth with people already holding something, which is what stops the first fifteen minutes being a queue.

The channel takes ten to twelve minutes and is the best-looking part of the trip: the tower wall from water level, at walking pace. That is the point at which the charter stops feeling like a meeting.

By 5.15 the boat is off JBR and Bluewaters with the light going. Sunset lands somewhere in the second half of the charter between October and April — the times by month are in sunset times in Dubai by month — and the return leg comes back through a lit Marina. Alongside at 6.30, off the boat by 6.45.

  • 16.30 — board. Drinks on deck before the lines are off.
  • 16.45 — out through the channel. The best ten minutes of the trip.
  • 17.15 — JBR, Bluewaters, Ain Dubai. The light starts to go.
  • 17.50 — turn. Sunset on the way back rather than on the way out.
  • 18.30 — alongside. Done, on time, with no decision to make.

How many people, and why sixteen is the ceiling

A hosting charter is a conversation, and a conversation does not survive twenty-five people. Above about sixteen the group splits into two or three clusters on different parts of the deck and stays split, which is a fine way to run a party and a poor way to run an introduction.

The 48ft at AED 750 an hour carries twelve and the 55ft at AED 1,050 carries sixteen. Both have a two-hour minimum, so AED 1,500 and AED 2,100 respectively. For eight to twelve guests the smaller boat is genuinely better, not just cheaper — a dozen people on a 48ft are one group.

If the number really is thirty, that is a different event with a different logic, and it is set out in chartering a yacht for 30 guests in Dubai.

Food that works standing up

Canapés, arranged in advance, served continuously through the charter. Not a sit-down. A plated meal needs the boat stopped and about ninety minutes, which turns a two-hour hosting charter into a four-hour lunch and removes the clean ending that was the whole reason to do it.

The practical constraint is that people are standing, moving and holding a drink, so anything requiring two hands and a knife does not get eaten. Everything else does. Menus and costs are in yacht catering menus and costs.

Soft drinks, water and ice are aboard as standard. Alcohol may be brought on for a private charter and stays on the boat; the rules are in alcohol on a yacht in Dubai, and for a mixed international group it is worth having a good non-alcoholic option that is not a soft drink.

What to leave out

No presentation. There is no screen, the light is wrong, and the moment a deck becomes a meeting room the boat stops doing the thing you paid for.

No speeches, or one of thirty seconds. No branded anything. No fixed seating plan — the deck rearranges itself and trying to control it reads as effort.

And no agenda circulated in advance. The invitation is a time, a berth and a finish time. That is the whole document.

The details that decide how it goes

Send the berth, not the marina. Dubai Marina is a three-kilometre canal with several pontoons and a guest arriving at the wrong end is fifteen minutes away on foot. Parking and directions are in getting to Dubai Marina and parking; send that link with the invitation.

Say flat shoes in the invitation. It saves an awkward conversation at the gangway and nobody minds being told.

Have one person from your side at the gangway rather than at the far end of the deck. Fifteen minutes of greeting people as they arrive is what makes the first half hour work.

And check the wind forecast the day before rather than the morning of. The sea off Dubai is usually calm between October and April, but a shamal makes a hosting charter a bad idea and it is visible two days out.

What to send when you enquire

Three things and it can be quoted the same day: the date, the number of guests, and whether you want catering aboard. Everything else — boat, timing, menu — follows from those.

The full list for a company booking, including invoicing and what a purchase order needs, is in corporate charter: what to send before booking.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How long should a client hosting charter be?

Two hours. It is long enough for the Marina channel, the coast and sunset, and short enough that the evening ends cleanly rather than requiring anybody to decide to leave.

How much does it cost to host clients on a yacht in Dubai?

AED 1,500 for two hours on the 48ft carrying twelve, or AED 2,100 on the 55ft carrying sixteen, with crew, fuel and marina fees included. Catering is priced per head on top.

What time should a hosting charter board?

Around 4.30pm from October to April, an hour later in the shoulder months, so that sunset falls in the second half of the charter and the return leg comes back through a lit Marina.

Can you give a presentation on a charter?

You can, and it is the most reliable way to waste the charter. There is no screen, the light is wrong, and the deck stops being the reason people came. Thirty seconds standing up is the maximum that works.

Should we do a sit-down meal or canapés?

Canapés. A plated meal needs the boat at anchor for about ninety minutes, which turns a two-hour hosting charter into a four-hour lunch and removes its clean ending.

How many clients is too many for one boat?

About sixteen. Above that the group splits into separate conversations on separate parts of the deck and stays split, which works for a party and not for an introduction.
