The waterfront during Dubai Shopping Festival

Dubai Shopping Festival runs for roughly a month from mid-December to mid-January, and the part of it worth planning around is not the shopping: it is the waterfront programme of weekend fireworks, night markets and outdoor events along the Creek, Al Seef, the canal and JBR, most of which is free. Dates shift by a week or two each year and are confirmed in the autumn.

The short version

  • Roughly a month, mid-December to mid-January. Exact dates are confirmed each autumn.
  • The waterfront programme — fireworks, night markets, outdoor events — is mostly free.
  • Weekend fireworks are the fixture worth planning around, usually at several waterfront sites.
  • It overlaps the busiest fortnight of the year, so book anything on the water early.
  • The second half, into January, is quieter and just as good.

What Dubai Shopping Festival actually is

A month-long citywide retail and events programme that has run since the mid-1990s, from about mid-December to mid-January. The retail half is discounts across the malls; the other half is a public events programme, and that is the one that reaches the waterfront.

The dates move by a week or two each year and are announced in the autumn, which is worth checking rather than assuming — this is one of the events most often quoted with last year's dates still attached.

The waterfront programme, which is the free part

Weekend fireworks are the fixture. Through the festival they run at waterfront locations across the city rather than at one, which means there is usually somewhere within reach of wherever you are staying.

Alongside them: night markets, outdoor food events and stages at Al Seef, the Creek, the Dubai Water Canal and along JBR. Most of it costs nothing to attend, which is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say about January in Dubai.

The waterfront sites are the right ones to pick because they are outdoors and December to January is the only stretch of the year when that is comfortable all evening.

  • Weekend fireworks, rotating across waterfront sites.
  • Night markets at Al Seef and along the Creek.
  • Outdoor stages and food events at the canal and JBR.
  • Mostly free. The shopping is the part that is not.

Watching the fireworks from the water

A boat is a good way to see a waterfront display and a poor way to see an inland one, and the festival has both. The coastal and canal sites work; anything at a mall or an inland venue does not.

The practical constraint is that a charter has to know where to be and when, so this is a booking that needs the specific date and site rather than a general request. Confirm the location before booking the boat, not after.

The same logic applies to the much bigger New Year display a few weeks earlier, and the geography of that is in where to watch New Year fireworks in Dubai.

When it overlaps the busiest fortnight of the year

The first half of the festival lands on the peak of the peak: the last two weeks of December, which are the busiest and most expensive of the Dubai year. Hotels are at their highest, restaurants need booking, and the charter fleet is committed.

The second half, running into January, is a different city. The visitors have largely gone home, the weather is identical, and the festival programme is still running. If the shopping and the events are the reason to come, the first two weeks of January are clearly the better half.

What December costs and why is in is Dubai worth visiting in December.

The four waterfronts, and which suits what

Al Seef is the restored heritage frontage on the Bur Dubai bank and the best-looking of the four after dark. It is the one to pick if the evening is the point rather than the event — it is described in Al Seef after dark.

The Creek is the working waterway and the busiest during the festival, with the souks alongside. Deira in this season is covered in Deira in winter.

The Dubai Water Canal is the newest and the most compact, and it walks well — the Dubai Water Canal on foot.

JBR is the most convenient and the busiest, with everything within two hundred metres of the sand.

Getting around during it

The metro rather than the road, on any evening with a display. Traffic around waterfront sites on a fireworks night is severe and parking near them is worse — the Green Line for the Creek and Al Seef, the Red Line and the tram for JBR and the Marina.

Arrive well before the advertised time. The good positions along a promenade fill an hour ahead, which is the one thing that is the same at every waterfront event in this city.

FAQ

Questions people ask

When is Dubai Shopping Festival?

Roughly a month from mid-December to mid-January. The exact dates shift by a week or two each year and are announced in the autumn, so they are worth checking rather than assuming.

Is there anything free during Dubai Shopping Festival?

Most of the waterfront programme. Weekend fireworks, night markets, outdoor stages and food events along the Creek, Al Seef, the canal and JBR are generally free to attend.

Can you watch the Dubai Shopping Festival fireworks from a boat?

The waterfront displays, yes. Inland and mall-based events, no. Because the site rotates through the festival, a charter needs the specific date and location confirmed before it is booked.

Which half of the festival is better to visit?

The second. The first two weeks of January have the same weather and the same programme as late December, without the peak crowds and the peak hotel rates.

Where are the best waterfront spots during the festival?

Al Seef for the setting, the Creek for the markets and the souks, the Dubai Water Canal for a compact walk, and JBR for convenience. All four are outdoors and all four work in this season.

How should you get to a fireworks night in Dubai?

By metro. Traffic around waterfront sites on a display night is severe and parking near them is worse. Arrive about an hour early — the good positions along a promenade fill well before the advertised time.
