Winter fishing off Dubai: January and February

Fishing off Dubai in January is the best of the year for kingfish and queenfish, because the water drops to around twenty-one degrees and pushes the predatory species inshore onto ground a charter can reach in an hour. Mornings are the calmest of the season, and a four-hour trip that would be marginal in June is genuinely productive in midwinter.

The short version

  • Sea temperature falls to about 21°C in January and February, the coolest of the year.
  • Kingfish and queenfish are the winter species. Both come closer inshore as the water cools.
  • Mornings are calmest. The wind on this coast builds through the afternoon far more often than it drops.
  • Four hours works in winter where six would be needed in summer — the ground is closer.
  • A shamal shuts fishing down for a day or two at a time and is visible in the forecast.

Why fishing in Dubai in January is different

The Gulf is shallow and it responds fast to air temperature. In August the sea off Dubai is around thirty-three degrees, which is warm enough that the larger predatory fish sit deep and offshore. By January it is near twenty-one, and that changes where they are rather than whether they are there.

Cooler water brings bait inshore and the fish follow it. Ground that is worth fishing in January can be forty minutes from the Marina rather than ninety, which is the entire practical difference between a half-day trip that works and one that is mostly transit.

February holds it. By late March the water is warming again and the pattern starts to move back out.

What actually runs in winter

Kingfish is the winter target on this coast and the reason people book in January. Queenfish run at the same time and fight harder than their size suggests. Cobia are around in cooler water. Barracuda are present most of the year and are more reliable in winter than in high summer.

The big offshore species — sailfish, tuna — are a different trip: further out, longer, and better in the shoulder months. A four-hour winter charter is not that trip and should not be sold as one.

Nobody can promise fish. What January buys is a better probability on closer ground, and any operator promising more than that is describing a fish farm.

  • Kingfish — the winter species, and the reason for a January booking.
  • Queenfish — same window, disproportionate fight.
  • Cobia — cooler water brings them in.
  • Barracuda — year-round, more reliable in winter.
  • Sailfish and tuna — a longer offshore trip, better in the shoulders.

Why mornings, and how early

The wind off Dubai builds through the day far more often than it drops, so the flattest water of any winter day is between first light and about ten in the morning. Flat water matters twice over on a fishing trip: it is easier to hold a position, and it is the difference between a comfortable four hours and four hours somebody spends being sick.

A 6.30 or 7am departure in January is cold on the way out — around eighteen degrees with wind over the deck — and worth it. By nine the sun is properly up and it is a pleasant twenty-two.

Anyone prone to motion sickness should read seasickness on a boat in Dubai before booking rather than after, because the useful measures are all taken the night before.

How long a winter trip needs to be

Four hours is a real fishing trip in January in a way it is not in June, because the ground is closer. Six is better and eight is the serious version, but the winter shortening of the run is what makes the shorter booking defensible.

The arithmetic to hold in mind: forty minutes out, forty back, and everything else is fishing. On a four-hour trip that is about two and a half hours with lines in the water, which is enough to matter. In summer, with a ninety-minute run each way, the same booking gives you an hour.

When to book relative to the season, and what the boat provides, is in when to book a fishing charter in Dubai.

The shamal, and what it does to a booking

The one weather event that reliably stops fishing off Dubai in winter is a shamal — a northwesterly that blows for one to three days and puts up a short steep sea that is unpleasant and unproductive. It is not a surprise: it is visible in a forecast two days out.

The right response is to move the date rather than to sail. A shamal day is not a marginal fishing day, it is a wasted one, and any operator that would rather take you out in it than move you is telling you something.

Winter fishing is otherwise remarkably reliable here. Outside a shamal, January and February mornings on this coast are as calm as the Gulf gets.

What to bring in January

Warmer clothing than the destination suggests, in layers. A 7am departure in January is genuinely cold on the way out and genuinely warm by ten, and that swing catches out almost everybody on their first winter trip.

Sun protection regardless. Winter sun on this coast is weaker but the reflection off the water is not, and four hours of it burns.

Everything else — rods, tackle, bait, ice — is aboard. What to leave behind is the same list as any charter and is in what not to bring on a yacht.

What happens to what you catch

It is yours. The crew will clean and bag it, and several restaurants around the Marina will cook a catch brought in — worth asking about at booking rather than at the berth.

Undersized and protected species go back, which is not discretionary. UAE fisheries rules set minimum sizes and seasonal closures on several local species, and a crew that is casual about that is a crew to avoid.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is January a good month for fishing in Dubai?

It is the best month for kingfish and queenfish. The sea drops to around twenty-one degrees, which brings bait and the predatory species inshore onto ground a charter can reach in about forty minutes.

What fish can you catch off Dubai in winter?

Kingfish and queenfish are the winter targets, with cobia in cooler water and barracuda year-round. Sailfish and tuna are a longer offshore trip and better in the shoulder months.

What time should a winter fishing charter leave?

Between first light and about 7am. The wind here builds through the day, so the flattest water and the best fishing are both in the first three hours after sunrise.

How cold is it on a boat off Dubai in January?

About eighteen degrees at seven in the morning with wind over the deck, rising to a pleasant twenty-two by nine. Layers matter more than a heavy jacket.

Is four hours enough for a fishing trip in winter?

Yes, in a way it is not in summer. The productive ground is about forty minutes out in January rather than ninety, so a four-hour trip gives roughly two and a half hours with lines in the water.

What is a shamal and does it stop fishing?

A northwesterly that blows for one to three days and puts up a short steep sea. It stops useful fishing, and it is visible in the forecast two days out — the right answer is to move the date rather than sail.
