Where a boat can drop anchor off Dubai

A boat can anchor off Dubai in most open coastal water outside the shipping lanes, and in practice charters use three places: the sheltered water inside the Palm Jumeirah crescent, the sandy ground off JBR and Bluewaters, and the shallows near the World Islands. Anchoring is not permitted in navigation channels, inside marina basins, in the Port Rashid and Jebel Ali approaches, or anywhere it would foul a cable or a pipeline.

The short version

  • The Palm crescent's inner water is the standard anchor stop: sheltered, sandy, 5–8 m deep.
  • Off JBR and Bluewaters works in calm weather and is fifteen minutes from the berths.
  • The World Islands shallows are the furthest of the three at about 15 km out.
  • No anchoring in channels, marina basins, or the Port Rashid and Jebel Ali approaches.
  • The captain chooses the spot on the day. Wind direction decides it more than preference does.

The three places charters actually stop

Inside the Palm Jumeirah crescent is the default. The crescent is a breakwater, so the water behind it is sheltered from the prevailing northwesterly, the bottom is sand at about five to eight metres, and it is twenty minutes from the Marina berths. Almost every anchor stop you will be offered on a standard charter is here.

Off JBR and Bluewaters is closer — about fifteen minutes — and works well in calm conditions. It is more exposed than the crescent, so it is the first stop to be abandoned when there is any wind.

The shallows around the World Islands are the third, roughly fifteen kilometres out. That is a longer charter and a different day, described in the World Islands explained.

  • Palm crescent, inner side: sheltered, sand, 5–8 m. The default.
  • Off JBR and Bluewaters: 15 min from the berths, calm days only.
  • World Islands shallows: ~15 km out, needs a longer charter.
  • Off the Burj Al Arab: possible, deeper, and more exposed.

Where anchoring is not allowed

Navigation channels, including the Dubai Marina channel itself and the Dubai Water Canal. These are traffic lanes and stopping in one is both prohibited and dangerous.

Inside marina basins other than in a berth. The approaches to Port Rashid and Jebel Ali, which are commercial ports with large vessel traffic and controlled approaches. And any charted cable or pipeline area, where an anchor can do damage that costs more than the boat.

There are also seasonal and event closures — the areas around a fireworks barge in late December, for example, or a marked exclusion zone during a race. Those are published in notices to mariners and the captain will know them.

Why the captain picks the spot, not you

Because wind direction decides it. The crescent shelters from the northwest, which is the prevailing direction and the shamal direction, but a southeasterly makes the same spot a lee shore and somewhere else becomes the right answer.

Depth and holding matter too. Sand holds an anchor and rock does not; five to eight metres is comfortable and thirty is not, on a boat this size.

So the honest position is that you choose the trip and the captain chooses the stop. If a specific spot matters — for photographs, for a proposal, for a group that wants to swim to a particular view — say so at booking, and it will be planned for rather than improvised.

How long a boat can stay

As long as your charter runs. There is no time limit on anchoring in open coastal water here and nothing to pay for it — an anchor stop is part of the charter rather than an extra.

The practical limit is what the group wants. An hour at anchor is a proper swim stop; thirty minutes is a quick one; two hours is a long lunch. On a four-hour charter, an hour at anchor is the usual shape.

Overnight at anchor

Permitted, and the standard overnight charter here is at anchor behind the Palm crescent rather than in a berth — that is what makes it worth doing. It requires a boat with a generator that runs all night for air conditioning, which on this fleet means the 62ft or the 85ft.

What the night actually involves, including the anchor watch and what happens if the wind gets up, is in a night at anchor off Dubai.

Swimming from an anchored boat

This is the whole point of the stop for most groups. The ladder goes down, the swim gear comes out, and somebody from the crew watches the water — that is standard rather than something to request.

The engines are off and stay off while anyone is in the water. Sea conditions, water quality and what to be aware of are in is the sea safe to swim in off Dubai.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Where can boats anchor off Dubai?

In most open coastal water outside the shipping lanes. In practice charters use three spots: inside the Palm Jumeirah crescent, off JBR and Bluewaters, and the shallows near the World Islands.

Where is anchoring not permitted in Dubai?

Navigation channels including the Marina channel and the Water Canal, marina basins, the Port Rashid and Jebel Ali approaches, and any charted cable or pipeline area.

How deep is the water where charters anchor?

About five to eight metres inside the Palm crescent, on sand. That is comfortable holding for a charter yacht and shallow enough that the water is clear on a calm day.

Can you choose where the boat anchors?

You can ask, and it will be planned for. The final call is the captain's because wind direction decides which spot is sheltered on the day — the Palm crescent shelters from the northwest and not from the southeast.

Is there a charge or a time limit for anchoring?

Neither. Anchoring in open coastal water off Dubai is free and untimed, and an anchor stop is part of the charter rather than an extra. The limit is how long your booking runs.

Can a yacht stay at anchor overnight off Dubai?

Yes, and the standard overnight charter here is at anchor behind the Palm crescent. It needs a boat with a generator running all night for air conditioning, which means the 62ft or the 85ft on this fleet.
